What is Adelaide Solar City all about?
Adelaide is one of seven regions in Australia, specially chosen to trial new approaches to producing and using energy as part of the Australian Government's Solar Cities program. From now through until 2013, we’ll be working together – governments, businesses and the community - to try out new ideas, products and services that can help contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment. The Adelaide Solar City will receive up to $15 million through the Australian Government's Solar Cities Program to help change the way individuals, communities, businesses and governments think about and use energy.
Salisbury, Tea Tree Gully, Playford and Adelaide City council areas make up the area specially chosen to trial area.
A special consortium of local councils and business partners has been formed to help all of us make the project a big success. What exciting things will be happening?
Being a part of the Adelaide Solar City project will be an exciting experience for everyone involved, and our community will gain some significant benefits over the seven year period of the trial, including:
The latest solar photovoltaic systems, or solar PV systems as they are more commonly known, will be installed in five well-known local buildings to use the sun’s energy to generate electricity.
Innovative finance packages will be offered to local residents to make household solar PV systems more affordable.
Residents and businesses in the region will be offered attractive incentives to switch to green power and help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
New electricity tariffs designed to reduce demand for power during peak times will be offered, and thousands of ‘smart meters’ will be installed in households choosing to take advantage of the cost and energy-saving benefits of these new tariffs.
Energy-efficiency audits to help residents and businesses understand how they can save energy, money and the environment.
